Expats granted increased property rights in Abu Dhabi

Foreign property buyers in Abu Dhabi, who have been restricted to leasehold agreements, can now buy freehold properties in designated investment zones.

The relaxation of property laws, which was announced this month, brings Abu Dhabi in line with Dubai, which has long given freedom to foreign buyers.

In 2002, a decree was given by the Dubai government granting freehold rights to non-Gulf cooperation council nationals. This has helped develop Dubai’s property market into one of the worlds most vibrant property spots.

Some of the investment zones being developed in Abu Dhabi are controlled by majority state-owned Aldar properties, the largest developer in the UAE.Image
